Mr. Coppens is a Belgian citizen, with an international career history, having worked and lived in London, Paris, Luxembourg, Brussels, Boston, New York and Melbourne. He has 20 years of experience in the Financial Services industry both as a consultant and as an employee. 17 years he spent within Capital Markets, especially within the post-trade infrastructure services. He was one of the youngest directors within the IT department of one of the ICSDs where he was responsible for the Asset Optimisation & Collateral Management Domain; as well as the Operational Excellence (Lean Six Sigma) within Application Development. As such he was involved in setting up systems and functionality for amongst others re-hypothecation of collateral, optimising the allocation algorithm including simulations of concentration limits, reconciliation of derivatives portfolios and obtaining liquidity at central banks using Triparty Collateral Management services. Part of his consulting history included coaching of senior IT management at the ICSD and other roles of advisory / industry architect for the T2S program of another ICSD supporting the Head of Strategy. He has equally done strategic studies for other ICSDs on the topic of collateral management: assessing the current challenges with the supply and demand of collateral, the feasibility of the roll out of a global collateral management support platform and the design of the business architecture & optimisation modules of a next-generation Triparty Collateral Management agency service.
Currently he is Principal Director at Accenture Management Consulting as part of their global Innovation & Thought Leadership capability group advising clients on new technologies like Blockchain & Analytics; and how these impact the Capital Markets industry. In that capacity, he participates in two research papers, one at The Stevens Institute (New York) on “Rich Agent Simulation environment for modelling the capital markets industry for strategic decision making” and a second at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on “Dynamic Collateral Optimisation Algorithms”.
Mr. Coppens holds an Undergraduate in Engineering and a Master Degree in Applied Economics & Systems Engineering from the university K.U.Leuven (Belgium); as well as a second Master in Finance degree from London Business School (UK). He is also Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt in operational excellence certified by Accenture/George Group.
Mr. Coppens is a returning guest lecturer at several Belgian universities and business schools on topics of capital markets and operational excellence.
